What inspires you to write?

Music inspires my writing like nothing else. The right song can drive an entire story. Music is everything. Music is life.

Your book, „Bright side” made poople cry, you should know that, but it also made people love Katie and Gus. I wanted to ask you about those characters, as they are really strong personalities. Is there any „personal touch” in any of those people?

I think most authors always put a bit of themselves, as well as people they know, into their characters. I do the same thing. Kate is chronically late like my husband. I’m always on time like Keller. Kate’s taco and coffee obsession is my own. My driving style is a lot like Kate’s, especially when I take corners. My husband and I say dude a lot. I’m a massive worrier/people pleaser like Keller. My husband is spontaneous like Kate. A lot of the funny things Gus says are things my husband has said. I love music just like Kate, though I don’t play an instrument and I only sing (badly and loudly) when I’m in my car alone. Audrey is exactly like one of my oldest and dearest friends – she’s the best mom I know. Gus is pure fantasy though, my imagination is vivid where he’s concerned. 😉

How do you relate to Katie?

Kate is the woman I would love to be when I grow up. She’s my hero.

Do you like Animals? What kind of? Do you have any yourself?

Of course. Dolphins are my favorite animal. I saw them swimming wild in the ocean a few years ago for the very first time and I almost cried. They’re beautiful. My husband, son, and I have a siamese cat. She’s named after pro hockey player Sidney Crosby. She’s a massive brat, but we love her anyway.

What is favourite food? What cousine is the best In your opinion?

Tacos. I could eat tacos every day. Mexican food has always been my favorite. The spicier the better.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’ve just started a YA standalone called The Other Side. Can you share some more details? It’s set in the 80’s (because that’s when I grew up). The main characters, Toby and Alice, are teenagers who live in the same apartment building. They both have challenges – one is depressed, the other is going blind. It’s going to be a story, hopefully, about looking at life from the other person’s perspective – from the other side.

What are you reading now? Have you read anything you’ve really enjoyed lately?

I just finished Two Boys Kissing by David Levithan and it will stay with me, in my heart, for a very long time. It’s definitely a new favorite. I’ve read several great books the past few weeks: Turtles All the Way Down by John Green, Vanilla by Billy Merrell, and Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor were all amazing.

Who is your favourite author?

It’s a tie: Colleen Hoover, John Green, Rainbow Rowell, and Tiffanie DeBartolo.

What authors or books have influenced you?

I love books that make me look at the world or myself differently. If I finish reading a book and feel better for it, like I’ve learned something or grown as a person, that’s the best feeling in the world. A gift. Irreplacable. Those are my favorite books and the ones I’ll never forget. A few of those books are: The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, How To Kill a Rockstar by Tiffanie DeBartolo, The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover, Two Boys Kissing by David Levithan, and Being Peace by Thich Nhat Hanh. All taught me something invaluable about being a better human being.

Where did the idea of „Bright side” come from?

I wrote Bright Side because I wanted to write a story about the most believably positive woman I could imagine. The story grew out of that idea.

Are you coffee or tea lover?

I am addicted to coffee – my love for it is intense.
